    LAP. GALLBLADDER STONE SURGERY

    TESTIMONIAL

    Treatment

    Why surgery is needed?

The primary aim of gallbladder stone surgery is to treat the symptoms (problems) you are facing due to gallstones. And to prevent the complications arising due to gallstones, some of which can be life threatening. You can read about them a little below on this same page.

    Asymptomatic Gall-Stones

Asymptomatic gall-stones are usually observed. Only high risk asymptomatic patients (those having more probability to develop gall-stone related complications) are advised for surgery. The High risk asymptomatic patients are diabetic, person on chemotherapy & immunocompromised person (HIV).

    Symptomatic Gall-Stones

  • Symptomatic patients should consult a medical expert for surgery. Laparoscopic (Key hole) gall-bladder surgery is a worldwide accepted treatment for such patients .
  • Stone dissolving therapy is ineffective for gallbladder stones and has inconsistent results. Also, in such patients, the main problem is with the gallbladder itself and with the patient's metabolism. And that is the reason why only stones are not removed by surgery. We need to remove the whole gallbladder. If only stones are removed and gallbladder is left behind in place, the stones will form again.
  • MYTH: Digestion is affected by gallbladder surgery

Contrary to the common perception, there is no change in digestion after removal of Gallbladder. There are no specific restrictions to diet. You need to eat small quantity more frequently than having large meals. You need to avoid very fatty food , spicy food and fried foods. These are the dietary advice that should ideally be followed by all as measure to improve overall health. After surgery you can have everything in moderation.

WHY CHOOSE ADROIT FOR GALLBLADDER STONE SURGERY?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive approach to surgery. Several small incisions are made in the abdominal wall, through which are inserted tubes that allow the passage of the surgical instruments needed for the operation.

Compared to open surgery, benefits of laparoscopic surgery include

    • Latest technology use/ Laparoscopic surgery
    • Less post-operative pain

Problems (complications) arising due to gallstones

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, surgery for the removal of the Gallbladder along with the stones is the only treatment option for gallbladder stones. But surgery is not a must. If you are not having pain and digestion problems due to gallbladder stones, never had any of the complications related to gallbladder stones in the past, then you can avoid surgery. But there is no other means of getting rid of the gallstones. To prevent a gallbladder stone complication and get into a situation where emergency surgery is required, we advised getting the surgery done electively at an appropriate time.
All patients who had an episode of pain in the right side of the abdomen, who have chronic problems with indigestion, and who had an episode of jaundice or pancreatitis related to gallbladder stones need surgery.
Surgery helps prevent gallbladder-related complications like jaundice due to the passage of stone in the bile duct, acute pancreatitis, acute cholecystitis ( inflammation of the Gallbladder), gallbladder perforation and Gallbladder Cancer. Some of these complications are life-threatening. It is much easier and safer to remove the Gallbladder by elective surgery than managing these complications or needing an emergency gallbladder surgery.
Those having episodes of pain, those with diabetes and already had any of these complications are at high risk for further complications, so such patients should get the surgery done at the earliest.
Consulting a leading gallbladder specialist in Ahmedabad can be very helpful. Dr. Chirag Thakkar offers complete evaluations and personalized treatment. His expertise can help you understand the risks of delaying surgery versus the benefits of an elective procedure, ensuring you make an informed decision regarding your health.

There is no change in digestion after the removal of the Gallbladder. Once you are having symptoms due to gallbladder stones, your Gallbladder as such is not functioning correctly. Removing this non-functioning Gallbladder is not going to add to your indigestion. Most patients who complain of digestive problems after the removal of the Gallbladder usually have other digestion-related issues like GERD, Acidity, Constipation or IBS, which they wrongly correlate with the removal of the Gallbladder. All these problems can be treated well with proper treatment if one understands it is not due to gallbladder removal.

Technically, we can do a surgery to remove only the stone, that is easily possible. But no surgeon in the whole world in today's time will do it, even if you insist on doing that. The reason is that the doctors know that doing so is inappropriate for you. You must understand that the problem is not stone but the non-functioning Gallbladder. Hence if we remove the stone, new stones will be formed soon. In the past, trials were done by injecting stone-dissolving chemicals in the Gallbladder (almost 50 years back). Still, all these attempts failed to give a solution. By now, it is clear that the best option is to remove the Gallbladder and the stone. In today's time, it is usually done by a laparoscopic method at a hospital for gallbladder stone surgery.
There are no specific restrictions to Diet after a gallbladder surgery. After gallbladder stone surgery, you need to restrict fatty, spicy, and fried foods. When you eat fried, oily or fatty food, eat it in small quantities and limit the frequency. But there will be no restriction on everyday healthy food. These are the dietary advice that should ideally be followed by all to improve overall health. After surgery, you can have everything in moderation.

Yes, gallbladder stone surgery can be done as a daycare procedure, where the patient can go home on the same day. Patient selection is very important for gallbladder surgery to be done in daycare.
It can be done for young non-obese patients below 45 years of age with no medical health conditions. When done, it is usually planned in the early morning hours so that we have enough time for recovery before a patient can be sent home.
As with any surgery, some risks are involved with surgery and anaesthesia. The risk is more with older adults and those having heart, lung, kidney or liver diseases. Thus, emphasis should be placed on proper evaluation before surgery, and if you are having any such medical problems precautions are taken to manage them before, during and after surgery. One specific risk or complication of gallbladder stone surgery is injury to the bile duct. The chances increased in patients with complicated gallbladder stones, those having stones for many years and multiple acute episodes.
For the same reason, it is advisable to get the surgery done at an appropriate time, electively at a centre with expertise for this surgery. The overall chance of all these complications occurring is less than 0.5%. Even when they occur, they can be properly managed when treated on time.
The cost of laparoscopic Gallbladder stone surgery would vary within a range, depending on whether surgery is emergency and complicated due to cholecystitis, other medical comorbidities of the patient (like Cardiac, kidney or liver diseases), facilities (infrastructure and the OT equipment) of the hospital, type of consumables used and the type of accommodation/room selected.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (Gallbladder removal) surgery would cost somewhere between 65000 to 120000 Indian Rupees if uncomplicated and between 80000 to 150000 Indian Rupees in a complicated situation
After a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, most of the patients are out of bed and moving around in 3-4 hours after surgery. They are allowed a light Diet on the same day of surgery. Most of the patients are discharged on the next day. Most patients don't need any pain injections after surgery; they are fairly comfortable just on oral painkillers started on the oral Diet. Also, most patients are off painkillers just in a few days. Patients are comfortable walking, climbing stairs, and caring for themselves at discharge.

Most patients can resume office-based work in a few days after surgery. Most female patients can resume household work a few days after surgery. More strenuous work, exercise and sports can be gradually resumed in 7-10 days, as per your comfort. However, there are no activity restrictions as such after a laparoscopic Gallbladder stone surgery.
